David Jost

Position: Hon. Secretary

David Jost has lived in the Gladstone district for over 50 years – initially at an address in Cromwell Road, then a flat in Limetree Avenue and finally an Edwardian house in Norfolk Street. He was brought up in Hampton, Middlesex. After getting a degree in sociology at Birmingham University he was a volunteer teacher in Tanzania for a year and then gained social work qualifications at York University. David was recruited as a Social Services Development Manager with Cambridgeshire County Council commuting every day from Peterborough to Cambridge for over 20 years! David took early retirement from the County Council in 1996 but took a part-time job with Peterborough City Council Social Services helping develop supported housing. He finally retired more-or-less completely in 2002.

David has a great affection for the Gladstone area – its friendly multi-cultural feel; its closeness to all essential services such as post office, dentist, GP and corner shops; the convenience of the Millfield shopping district just half a mile away and the city centre less than a mile away; the generally safe streets and the peaceful environment. For more than 20 years, David was a governor of Gladstone Primary School and served as chairman for 10 years.

Role as Part of the Board of Trustees of Gladstone Connect

David has served as Honorary Secretary for many years – the role is self-explanatory.

Reason for Joining the Board

David was invited by Keith Stapleford the former long-term Hon Treasurer to join the board as he was very well aware that major improvements to the area were required (and still are!).

Hopes for Achieving Objectives

Frankly, the neighbourhood continues to be overlooked by the Council which has made plenty of promises but no improvements. Current government policies mean that the population of the Gladstone area will continue to face low incomes, poor housing and health deficiencies. But David believes that Gladstone Connect can make some real difference in local people’s lives providing a base for health and education services as well as a venue for leisure and entertainment.

Skills and Expertise

David knows the area extremely well and has good contacts with a range of relevant people. He has a useful administrative sense and can use a computer with reasonable competence.
